TCR UK Touring Car Championship Test Day at Silverstone

We joined the new championship at their recent testing day ahead of the season launch at Silverstone on Easter weekend.

The newly launched British series joins other TCR Touring Car Championships regionally, nationally and internationally under the TCR banner, this means the same cars can be used through those championships as well as the FIA World Touring Car Cup. This concept gives a lot of scope to a driver wishing to compete, it also for instance, allows a team to rent their car to other drivers across those championships when not competing with it themselves. This makes the UK series an attractive proposition as it means cost such as buying a TCR car can be recouped relatively quickly. The championship also aims to be a springboard for up and coming driver talent.

There were just a few TCR UK cars out on track as the media day was postponed until the end of the month due in part to a clash with the Geneva Motorshow, however this didn’t stop the likes of Maximum Motorsports Stewart Lines, who has left BTCC to join TCR UK. Also out in a SEAT Leon was Carl Swift.

The former Civic Cup champion is the first entrant in the TCR UK’s DSG Trophy open to drivers who have DSG transmission, the prize being a €20,000 sequential gearbox upgrade.

Finlay Crocker and Ollie Taylor hit the circuit in their Honda Civics, Taylor clocking up the fastest times of the day on the damp track. Lewis Kent in his Hyundai i30 N was the fastest in the second test session, meanwhile Josh Price suffered engine problems in his Honda Civic and had to abandon the test early on.

Sean Walkinshaw, son of former European Touring Car Champion was also testing, achieving the second fastest time overall.

There were a few cars from the support race package also testing, including in Formula Ford 2017 Walter Hayes Trophy winner Michael Moyers. Competing in the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup and out on track were Darelle Wilson and Dennis Strandberg, the former British GT driver.

Joining them was Strandbergs Maximum Motorsport team mate Tim Docker.
