In the final round of the Blancpain Sprint Cup at the Nurburgring, the title was taken by Robin Frijns and Stuart Leonard in the #17 Team WRT Audi, while Belgian Audi Club Team WRT takes the Sprint Team title for the fifth consecutive year. The #84 Mercedes AMG Team HTP Motorsport were in tight contention for the title but a combination of technical issues and a drive through penalty dashed their chances.
In the Pro-Am Cup the win went to #333 Rinaldi Racing Ferrari’s Alexander Mattschull and Daniel Keilwitz, their fourth win of the season, and Rinaldi Racing scooping the Pro-Am team title.
The #84 Mercedes took the lead, and after contact between the Bentley of Maxime Soulet and #19 Grasser Racing Team Lamborghini which resulted in a drive through penalty for the #8 Bentley the battle between the front runners commenced.
A safety car period allowed Dries Vanthoor-Marcel Fässler in the #5 Audi to edge closer to the lead car however, an incident in pit stops when an airhose became entangled with the Audi, caused a penalty as the mechanic holding the wheel gun fell into the pit lane. This was followed by the #84 Mercedes suffering damage leading the way open for the #17 Audi and #2 Audi to fight for the Championship title., with Frijns crossing the finish line 4 seconds ahead of the #2 Audi of Markus Winkelhock and Will Stevens and the #84 Mercedes of Franck Perera and Max Buhk just behind them the Championship was decided.
The final round of the 2017 Blancpain GT Series, the Endurance Cup takes place on 30th September/1st October in Barcelona.
