Le Mans dropped in favour of Formula E
Audi announced today its intention to leave the FIA World Endurance Championship, including the 24hr Le Mans race, to commit to a Formula E factory-backed team.
Chairman of the board of Management Rupert Stadler stated “We’re going to contest the race for the future on electric power. As our Production Cars are becoming increasingly electric, our motor sports cars, as Audi’s technological spearheads, have to even more so”
With Jaguar and BMW already entered and Mercedes Benz set to enter Formula E in 2018/19, the move by Audi is a significant one.
Audi have had huge success in WEC with 13 victories in 24hr Le Mans, also taking the title in the American Le Mans Series nine times from 2000 to 2008.
